In 2009 you launched your eponymous jewelry collection after years working as an attorney, how did this come about?
It started as a fun project that a friend and I did together – making bracelets. After making a few samples and getting such a positive reaction from our friends, we decided to work on it as a business.
Where are you from originally?
I was born in Ohio to parents of Lebanese descent. Was moved to the Middle East (Lebanon and Saudi Arabia) as a child for a couple of years and then to a small town outside of Pittsburgh called New Castle.
How much time do you spend in the Middle East? How does the fashion there compare with here in the US?
I’ve been to the Middle East many times over the past several years. Most recently I went to Beirut in September for my bachelorette party.
Did you find it challenging to enter the fashion industry without a design background? How did you learn to design jewelry?
The challenge was much less about designing jewelry and more about quickly learning how the fashion and accessories business works. Design has always been in my life, my design aesthetic was honed at an early age.
What is the inspiration behind your collection?
Like many designers, my inspiration comes from several places including the city I live in, the food that I eat, the people in my life and the strangers that I don’t know. And last but not least, my nephews and my dogs.
You made your first piece of jewelry as a gift for your sister. At what point did you think this could be a career?
When she paid me for it. Just kidding! When some of her friends asked her where they could by similar bracelets and cufflinks.
Were you surprised by the popularity of the “push” presents?
No, there was a tremendous opportunity in the market for thoughtful, beautiful reminders of a life-changing event.
Can you tell us about the eye theme featured throughout?
The eye is an iconic symbol that is celebrated throughout several cultures. And, in today’s complicated world it’s a tried and tested good luck charm that looks great with a heavy dose of bling.
Rose gold and black diamonds are a collection stand out? How did you come to this combination?
I think black diamonds are very sexy and cool. I like the juxtaposition of the delicate feminine rose gold and the strong, sexy edge of black diamonds.
What can we expect to see from Alexandra Moosally for Spring 2012?
I’m going to stay true to who I am. But be on the lookout as 2012 is going to be the year of the pinky ring!
Where is the collection produced?
The bulk of the collection is produced in NYC through and through with a couple of pieces hailing from the New York of the East – Istanbul.
Where is the collection retailing?
It is currently retailing at ABC Home and will be in Barneys COOP in Spring ’12.
