Footwear designer Burak Uyan, previously at Giambattista Valli and Givenchy, launched his namesake line in 2011. In September 2011, he partnered with Rodarte to create a collection for SS12, inspired by Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.”

What sets your shoes apart from others?

Never sacrificing my creativity while utilizing traditional craftsmanship. Plus stepping outside the box when it comes to materials: I love to juxtapose conflicting textures and fabrics within footwear design.

After just one year since your launch, Burak Uyan is distributed internationally through site such as Net-a-Porter and Luisa Via Roma. Where are most of your customers located?

I would have to say most of our clients are in Russia. They are quite eccentric, love to be in the limelight and push the envelope!

How was your experience working with Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte? Will the shoes you designed for their show this season be sold in stores?

It was great to work with Laura and Kate and to exchange input and ideas. We connected immediately. It opened my creative horizons to let someone else’s method of design seep into my work. But the shoes will remain show pieces and won’t be sold.

Are you currently collaborating with any other designers?

As of the moment not yet, I am very selective and I don’t want to collaborate with any label just to have done it.

You started out designing all different types of accessories for Giambattista Valli. What influenced you to start your eponymous collection with shoes?

I realized that it is shoes that excite women most. There’s nothing like seeing a woman open the box and trying on shoes. The expression in her face, how excited she gets.
