Accessories designer Patty Perreira is President, Co-Founder, and one-half of the duo behind Barton Perreira, a cutting edge eyewear brand founded in 2007. Together with partners Bill Barton and Tim Cadiente, Perreira and her team pool together an impressive roster of expertise in design, artistry, style and entertainment: Perreira tenured for 18 years at Oliver Peoples and has consulted on the eyewear collections of Paul Smith, Prada, and Helmut Lang, Barton served as the President of Optical Shop of Aspen for 11 years and President of Oliver Peoples for four, while Cadiente continues to add musicians such as Jack White and The Black Keys to his portfolio. Though based in Los Angeles, each piece of Barton Perreira eyewear is handmade in Japan using ancient technique, high-end materials, and innovative technology, to create an exclusive piece as unique as the wearer.

Barton Perreira sunnies are the ultimate luxury purchase. When did you launch the line?

We shipped our first frames in December of 2007.

How did you, Bill, and Tim meet?

Bill, Tim and I all worked together at Oliver Peoples. Although, Bill and I knew each other about 10 years before that when he was the President of the Optical Shop of Aspen. OSA was a premier account of Oliver Peoples during that time.

What’s the division of labor between you?

Bill handles the business aspects of the company, which allows me to focus on the creative. It’s actually perfect and we both truly enjoy what we do. I love that I can devote all of my time and energy to design!

How has your business changed since being inducted into the CFDA?

We continue to experience an increase in our sales, as well as greater PR exposure. The CFDA has presented great networking opportunities.

Brad Pitt is always photographed in your sunnies! Did you freak out when you first saw him photographed?

Yes, I was completed flattered and he looks so good in them. I freaked when I saw Ryan Gosling and David Beckham, too!

How has the line evolved in the last 5 years?

The collection has definitely expanded to include a wider range of both sunglass and optical styles. There is a greater consumer demand for the collection, which gives it a more important presence with our retail partners.

The frames are handmade in Japan—why did you choose this for production?

I believe the Japanese eyewear manufacturers are the best. They are meticulous and very detail oriented…we would not accept anything less. We are not willing to compromise when it comes to the quality of Barton Perreira.

The stocklist for the brand is impressive (Bergdorf’s, Jeffrey, Saks, Neiman Marcus, Opening Ceremony)—how does the variety of these stores reflect your customer?

Barton Perreira actually has a pretty wide demographic, but all are very discerning individuals who appreciate great quality and style. We create exclusive design and color options for certain retailers, which allows many of the stores to create their own Barton Perreira collection well suited to their particular clientele.

Are you still collaborating with Opening Ceremony and Chloë Sevigny? What’s that process like? How involved is Chloë?

We are still working very closely with Opening Ceremony. We have done three collaboration collections with Chloë and OC. They are great to work with and Chloë is very involved in the conception. She has great style and a very unique point of view. It was exciting to work with Chloë and the Opening Ceremony team and to bring this eyewear vision to reality.

Any other collaborations on the horizon?

We have a couple of projects in the works, but I cannot discuss them just yet. We will keep you posted…
