Rachel Mansur is one half of the design duo behind handbag line Mansur Gavriel. After completing her studies in textiles at Rhode Island School of Design, Mansur moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in art direction. Through an act of serendipity in 2010, she met Floriana Gavriel, a then Berlin-based designer who has spent time at Anna Sui and Lanvin. In 2012, the two like-minded souls decided to meet halfway in New York City to launch Mansur Gavriel with functional handbags that boast the brand’s signature simplicity. Their bags have become the ‘It’ bag of the season and have been photographed carried by Kirsten Dunst, blogger Garance Doré and Teen Vogue editor-in-chief Eva Chen.
How did the two of you meet? Where were you?
We met in 2010 in Los Angeles at an XX concert. We randomly started chatting and met the next day at the downtown flower market. We quickly realized we shared a strong mutual aesthetic and began collaborating long distance between Berlin and Los Angeles. We both relocated to NYC in April 2012 to officially open the company.
Since launching your collection last year, how has your brand changed? How many bags did you launch with?
We launched with our core collection, and we will carry these on from season to season. We will add a mini bucket late spring, and continue to build upon a collection of classics season after season.
What inspires the classic shapes?
Elegance and practicality.
Will you introduce new shapes in the coming seasons?
Yes, we will offer several new options for Fall 2014.
Where are the bags produced?
Whose idea was it to do different colors inside the bags?
We are constantly playing with the nuanced line between contemporary and classic. While developing the concept for the brand, we liked the idea of something strong and traditional on the exterior, with a contrast of something fun and contemporary on the interior.
How important is social media to the brand?
We love using Instagram as a way to express the world we would like to build and directly communicate with our customers.
Who manages your platforms?
The bags are sold out everywhere! When can we expect more shipments?
Net-a-Porter is restocking the black flamma bucket bag any day now. We will restock with most of our retailers in late February, including some new stores for us, such as Bergdorf Goodman, Kirna Zabete, Stand Up Comedy, Fred Segal, Curve and more. We recommend pre-ordering if you have a favorite color in mind!
(ed. note: Net-a-Porter is restocked! Happy shopping!)
Did you create any new bags for Pre-Fall? Can you tell us anything about Fall ’14?
For Fall ’14, we’re playing with bringing the color to the outside!
