Unzipped: How to.. Bare it in a bralette

Designers have been pushing feminist motifs now more than ever. I can’t say I’m that surprised, but it’s definitely a welcome change to shed light on social issues. Taking that into consideration, this new revival of bralettes seems like it’s right in line with the recent shift. Not to mention, I could see this becoming quite appealing as the start of Spring begins to settle in.

I know the thought of walking around the city in a bralette isn’t the most conventional option for most women, but it’s a lot more feasible than one would seem. On the runway, I was excited by the flirty frills at Altuzarra. The Spring collection speaks to a retro remake of traditional feminine silhouettes with higher waistlines and coordinating prints. At Alexander Wang, the vibe leaned more toward the downtown-cool side, and I would expect nothing less. Aligning with the girl squad mentality it’s come to represent, the collection played up a masculine edge and female perspective with bikini-like bra tops paired with boxy bottoms.

It’s all about styling. Play peek-a-boo with your bra top by throwing on a blazer as seen on the runway, or tucking in an unbuttoned shirt. Try with pretty florals courtesy of Prada and the Michael Kors Collection. And if you’re thinking of layering over a button-down, neutrals from Jil Sander and The Row would be a great place to start. As we approach another festival season, you’ll want to keep in mind chic pieces from Miguelina and Rosie Assoulin for your Coachella must-haves. Then for flirty party looks, there are daintier bralettes from Dolce & Gabbana and Michael Lo Sordo that can be dressed up or down. Have I sold you yet?

I understand that this isn’t a trend for everyone. But I must admire this attempt to play with convention and liberate the female form. You don’t have to be Carrie Bradshaw to possess the confidence it takes to walk down the street in a fraction of a shirt. So.. sun’s out, bralettes on.
