Unzipped: How to.. Give preppy a reboot

Call me nostalgic for my school days, but I’ve always held preppy pieces near and dear to my heart. From oxfords to khakis to every collar and crease in between, there’s something to be said for the elevated simplicity of it all. But although a true purist, I’m always down for a shake up. In this case, Spring 2017 is shining a whole new light on our traditional faves.

For many designers this season, it’s all about bringing back vintage silhouettes and motifs which has transcended into this new wave of Ivy-inspired looks. For instance, the Michael Kors Collection reworked multiple styles like belted blazers of varying lengths and cropped wide-leg khaki bottoms. Paired with 70’s themed wide-collared shirts and platforms for every look, it’s a revamp that I can totally get on board with. The duo at Monse took a more deconstructed approach to the preppy vibe. Striped button-down shirts with cut-out shoulders and elongated sleeves half tucked into baggy chino-pinstripe hybrid culottes is not only a mouthful, but definitely a pairing I’d like to try in the warmer months.

Now.. let’s go shopping. This trend is great because the layering options are many, and the palette is easy to work in and out of your pre-existing pieces. Button-ups are a must, and I love the added wrap-tie embellishments on the striped cotton shirt from Tibi. Polo’s are another no-brainer for preppy styles new and old. Try the short-sleeve half-zip from Frame or pull a wild card with the Balenciaga striped shirt dress. I’m also slightly obsessing over Jacquemus‘ pinstriped wide-leg pants. They’re perfectly cuffed and itching for a pair of white sneakers. And nothing says preppy quite like a well-fitted blazer, the Étoile Isabel Marant Janey blazer is one of my favorites.

I love that designers are bringing preppy to the people again. By using more exaggerated embellishments, designers are helping to reintroduce this as a style that is as much work, as it is play. This trend also invokes the androgyny that has started to become more popular season after season. If this is the new normal, cuff those pants and count me in.
